Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, welcomed a baby boy today, May 6th, at Buckingham Palace.
The royal family announced via Instagram (@sussexroyal) that Meghan gave birth to their first child early this morning at 5:26 local time. The graphic highlights the sex of the newborn and says the new parents are “overjoyed to announce the birth of their child.”
"I'm just over the moon," Harry said from Windsor's Frogmore Cottage when announcing the birth.
It's a week past Meghan’s due date, making her 41 weeks when she went into labor. It isn’t known whether her labor was induced. Baby Sussex weighs 7 lbs 3 oz.
“The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives,” said the royal family’s statement.
Harry and Meghan are expected to raise their son at Frogmore Cottage. He is the eighth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth and the fourth grandchild of Prince Charles. He is seventh in line to the British throne, after Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and Prince Harry.
The name of Baby Sussex hasn’t been released yet, and it isn’t known whether Queen Elizabeth will give him a title.
