Lyft Steps Up for Black Women’s Equal Pay Day

Lyft has partnered with Black Girls CODE and Round Up & Donated to champion Black Women's Equal Pay Day.

Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is today, Aug. 7th. Yeah, I didn't realize it's a thing either, but it sure is necessary to bring awareness to the wage gap between Black women and white men.

Black women are paid 38 percent less than white men, on average. Therefore, in order for a Black woman to earn the same salary as her white male counterpart, she must work seven months and seven days more than him. Since we all have the same 365 days in a year regardless of skin color or gender, that's impossible.

Lyft, however, is helping to level the earning field. In honor of Black Women's Equal Pay Day, Lyft has partnered with Black Girls CODE and Round Up & Donated. From today until the end of August, Lyft will donate 38 cents to Black Girls CODE for every Lyft ride "Rounded Up" in support of Black Girls CODE. Tens of thousands of Lyft riders have already Round Up & Donated their fare in support of Black Girls CODE and raised nearly $150,000, according to press materials. Lyft will donate up to $10,000 in an effort to grow the number of women of color working in technology and give underprivileged girls a chance to become technological masters.
